How to Use Dagger Duchess in Merge Tactics!
The Dagger Duchess is a new ruler in Merge Tactics that introduces items to the game: every round you get a powerful Dagger that you can equip to one of your troops. The Dagger gives that unit extra range and a huge boost to attack speed, turning the right carry into a machine gun for a few seconds.
This guide is based on gameplay and insights from ReTaik and will walk you through how the Dagger works, which troops use it best, recommended comps, and how strong Dagger Duchess really is in the current meta.
Unlocking Dagger Duchess & New Skins
With this update:
- New ruler progression on Star Steel Road:
- Unlock King as usual from the Star Steel Road
- Keep Empress at 650 trophies
- Start unlocking Dagger Duchess at 1,600 trophies
- New skins:
- Two skins are available from the normal trophy road
- One premium skin is a $20 shop offer
If you want to support ReTaik, you can use creator code RT when buying skins.
How the Dagger Works
Dagger Duchess gives you one Dagger item that you can equip to any troop at the start of each round.
When equipped, the Dagger:
- ✅ Adds +1 range to the equipped troop
- ✅ Increases hit speed by ~180% (roughly 1.5Ã: faster attacks)
- ✅ Has 8 durability – you effectively get 8 powered-up attacks before the effect disappears
In-game, when ReTaik equips the Dagger on a Wizard, the tooltip shows:
- 8 / 8 durability
- +1 range
- +180% hit speed
Once the durability runs out, the troop goes back to its normal stats, which is why some carries like Dark Goblin can feel amazing at first and then suddenly “run out of steamâ€.
If you forget to equip the Dagger manually, it will auto-equip to your strongest troop (highest elixir and star level, then highest damage), which in ReTaik’s example was the Royal Giant.
Strengths & Weaknesses of Dagger Duchess
Strengths
- ✅ Access to an item every round: A free Dagger is a consistent power spike that can turn one unit into a hyper-carry
- ✅ Flexible targeting: You can put the Dagger on different units depending on the matchup and board
- ✅ Great with ranged damage dealers: Units like Dark Goblin, Archer, Wizard, and Royal Giant get insane value from extra range and attack speed
- ✅ Works well with hit-based abilities: For troops that trigger abilities based on attacks (rather than time), faster hits mean faster ability value
Weaknesses
- ⌠Very low elixir generation: Compared to other rulers, Dagger Duchess gives you little to no extra elixir
- ⌠Hard to afford expensive troops: Because you don’t generate much elixir, it’s difficult to consistently buy and upgrade high-cost carries
- ⌠Short power window: The Dagger has limited durability, so some carries dominate early in the fight then quickly fall off
- ⌠Weaker than Echo Sage overall: ReTaik compares her directly to Echo Sage and feels that, in terms of raw power, Echo is currently stronger
Overall, Dagger Duchess feels like a consistent but not overpowered ruler: you get reliable item value each round, but you pay for it with a weaker economy.
Best Units to Equip the Dagger
From ReTaik’s testing, here are the best troops to use with the Dagger and why:
1. Dark Goblin – Machine Gun Marksman
- Attacks very quickly, so the +180% hit speed makes him absolutely melt targets
- With the Dagger equipped, Dark Goblin feels like he has the old Ranger trait built in
- Excellent in the four Marksman comp, but note that he can run out of durability quickly and then lose pressure
Best use: Put the Dagger on a 2★ or 3★ Dark Goblin when you’re playing a marksman-heavy composition.
2. Archer – Cheap, Reliable Carry
- Scales very well with attack speed and range
- Easier to 3★ than some higher-cost carries
- In the video, a 3★ Archer with Dagger melts Golden Knight and Witch once fully upgraded
Best use: When you don’t have elixir for expensive carries, a 3★ Archer with Dagger can carry fights very efficiently.
3. Wizard – Splash Damage + Dagger
- Gains range and attack speed, which multiplies his splash damage value
- Works particularly well with the new Hinder trait (40% chance to slow enemies on hit for 3s), since more hits = more slows
Best use: Put the Dagger on Wizard when you want AoE damage and slows to control fights.
4. Valkyrie – Melee Splash with Extra Range
- Gets +1 range, letting her hit from slightly further back
- Her splash damage benefits greatly from the higher hit speed
Best use: Great when you need a frontline carry that can chew through grouped enemies.
5. Royal Giant – Tanky Ranged Carry
- Not the highest DPS, but very tanky (around 6,000 HP, more than double an Archer)
- Can act as a frontline tank while still benefiting from extra range and attack speed
Best use: In the four Marksman comp, Royal Giant is a half-tank, half-marksman that holds the line while your backline shreds.
Units that Don’t Benefit as Much
- Witch: Her skeleton-spawning ability is time-based, not hit-based, so the Dagger doesn’t make her spawn faster
- Any unit whose main value is not tied to attack speed or auto-attacks will usually be a worse target than a pure DPS unit
Recommended Compositions
Four Marksman Comp (Best Showcased with Dagger Duchess)
One of the strongest comps ReTaik plays with Dagger Duchess is a four Marksman setup:
- Royal Giant – Tanky backline/half-tank that can hold the front row if needed
- Dark Goblin – Main Dagger target for insane DPS
- Archer – Secondary carry, great with Dagger or without
- Musketeer – Rounds out the four Marksman synergy
- Valkyrie + Knight + Giant (or similar tanks) – Frontline to give your carries time to fire
Why this comp works well:
- The Dagger synergizes perfectly with multiple ranged DPS units
- You have a solid frontline (Knight, Valkyrie, Giant) to buy time
- Royal Giant acts as a pseudo-tank + marksman, making the board feel very balanced
Goblin-Focused Economy Support
Because Dagger Duchess does not provide much elixir, pairing her with Goblin units can help your economy:
- Goblin Queen was buffed – she now counts as a Goblin for traits
- You can reach 4 Goblins more easily thanks to this change
- In the video, an opponent has 4/4 Goblins because Goblin Queen counts, which shows how strong this synergy can be
You can mix a Goblin core into your comp if you’re struggling with elixir, especially in the mid game.
Game Plan by Stage
Early Game
Goals:
- Stabilize your board without overspending, since you don’t get much extra elixir
- Start building towards your core carries (Dark Goblin, Archer, Wizard, Royal Giant)
- Use cheap frontliners like Knight and Giant to buy time for your Dagger carry
Tips:
- Don’t chase too many expensive units early; you won’t have the elixir to support them
- Use the Dagger on whichever ranged unit gives you the best early round power spike
Mid Game
Goals:
- Assemble your four Marksman core if you’re playing that comp
- Get your main carry (Dark Goblin or Archer) to 2★ or 3★
- Decide which unit will consistently hold the Dagger
Tips:
- If you roll Dark Goblin, prioritize him as your main Dagger target
- If you don’t find Dark Goblin, a 3★ Archer is an extremely strong alternative
- Keep your frontline healthy so your carry can fire for the full Dagger duration
Late Game
Goals:
- Max out your main carry (preferably 3★)
- Keep the Dagger on your strongest DPS unit every single round
- Maintain a balanced board: enough tanks so your carry doesn’t die, enough DPS so fights don’t drag on after Dagger expires
Tips:
- Be careful about chasing too many high-elixir units – Dagger Duchess doesn’t give you the income to support them all
- Think of your game plan as “one insane carry + solid support†rather than a team of expensive stars
Dagger Duchess, Items & New Traits
Items in Merge Tactics
Dagger Duchess is important not only as a ruler, but also as an introduction to items in Merge Tactics:
- The Dagger is one of the first items we see in-game
- Future modifiers on the Star Steel Road will introduce more items like the Fisherman Hook and Prince Lance
- This brings Merge Tactics closer to other auto chess games like TFT, where items on carries are a core mechanic
Hinder Trait Synergy
The update also introduces the Hinder trait:
- 40% chance to slow enemies hit (attack and movement speed) for 3 seconds
- With a unit that hits fast (like Wizard with Dagger), you can almost permanently slow frontliners
This makes the combination of Hinder + Dagger + splash units (like Wizard or Valkyrie) especially powerful in certain matchups.
How Strong Is Dagger Duchess? (Vs Echo Sage & Others)
ReTaik repeatedly compares Dagger Duchess to Echo Sage, since both:
- Don’t provide extra elixir
- Have normal team size
- Focus their power into a special mechanic (Echo vs Dagger)
Key takeaways:
- Echo Sage currently feels stronger overall:
- Echo can one-shot enemies and scale into a 3-second AoE nuke at 4★
- There are many clips of Echo simply deleting boards
- Dagger Duchess feels:
- More consistent, because you always have a Dagger every round
- But generally weaker in raw carry potential, and held back by low elixir
In many games, the biggest issue with Dagger Duchess is:
- You don’t get enough elixir
- You struggle to afford a high-cost, high-star carry
- Even though the Dagger is strong, your overall board can fall behind rulers with better economies
That said, in the right comp (especially four Marksman) and with good positioning, Dagger Duchess can still absolutely dominate individual games.
TL;DR (Quick Checklist)
- ✅ Dagger Duchess gives you a Dagger item each round that provides +1 range, +180% hit speed, and limited durability
- ✅ Best Dagger targets: Dark Goblin, Archer, Wizard, Valkyrie, and Royal Giant (in four Marksman comps)
- ✅ Focus on one main carry with the Dagger and support it with cheap tanks and utility
- ✅ Four Marksman with Royal Giant, Dark Goblin, Archer, and Musketeer is one of the best showcased comps
- ✅ Consider Goblin synergies (especially with the buffed Goblin Queen) to help with your weak elixir income
- âš ï¸ Dagger Duchess has poor elixir generation, making it harder to play expensive boards
- âš ï¸ Compared to Echo Sage, she currently feels weaker in raw power, but offers a fun and flexible item-based playstyle
